About Pilates

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness" - Joseph Pilates.

Picture
Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. Joseph was influenced by physical fitness at an early age due to his own personal sickness. His methods were influenced by western forms of exercise, including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling.

His original work began with minimal equipment and a system of mat excercises that were later known as "Contrology". Unfortunately, Joesph Pilates died without knowing how famous and successful his work became across the world,  which is now commonly known as Pilates.

Benefits of Pilates
It’s believed that the participation of regular Pilates practise can help improve posture and increase muscle tone as well as balance and joint mobility, and relieve stress and tension.

Pilates can complement  existing training programmes by developing whole body strength and flexibility  therefore reducing the risk of injury.

Pilates can also provide pain relief to people with non-specific lower back pain. Combined with a healthy and balanced diet Pilates can help to maintain a healthy weight.

What is 'mat work'?
Joseph Pilates originally devised more than 500 exercises for his system, of which 34 were mat exercises. My training has been based on these original mat exercises often referred to as ‘classical  Pilates’.  These excercises are performed  on the floor with the use of a mat - specfic for the use in Pilates and Yoga.

Excercises can involve small equipment such as magic circles, ankle  or hand weights, as well as non-pilates gear such as stretch bands, gym balls and foam rollers.

My mat work training is adapted to suit different levels of fitness and ability. Intensity of sessions can vary depending on levels of fitness.

Key benefits of Pilates:

  • Building greater strength.
  • Increasing muscle tone and improved posture
  • Effective for injury rehabiltation
  • Less incidence of back pain
  • Improved mobility and flexibility
